We recommend booking in advance if possible via the ‘Timetables’ page, especially during busy periods, school holidays and special events, to secure your desired train time and date.
All of our Catering Services: Afternoon Tea, Whisky & Gin Tasting, Fish & Chips Train, and Picnic Hampers, must be pre-booked online. Catering bookings normally close at least 12 hours before train departure time.
On-the-day tickets can be purchased from our booking offices at Llanfair Caereinion & Welshpool Raven Square Stations on most operating days. However, we can not guarantee space for walk-up passengers at busy periods.
Ticket prices vary and can be found on our ‘Journey Options & Fares’ section. Please book tickets online via our ‘Timetables’ page where possible.
We encourage visitors to ‘Gift Aid’ their fare if possible as this allows us to claim back some of the tax you pay to the government as a donation to the charity.
Most Standard Class return tickets are sold as a timed departure from either Llanfair Caereinion or Welshpool with the flexibility to return on any later train (subject to available seating capacity).
Members Concessionary and Discounted tickets (e.g. HRA, Great Little Trains, Rail Staff Leisure) can be booked online. The relevant discount card must be presented when boarding the train.

Single and intermediate station tickets can only be purchased on-the-day from our booking offices or the train guard (cash only).
We will need to scan the barcode from your e-ticket when you arrive at the station. Please have this available, either electronically on a smartphone or tablet, or as a printout of your confirmation email.
Our trains operate most weekends and selected midweek days from April to October, and daily during school holidays. Please select the ‘Timetables’ page to see our full year calender.

Our normal timetabled trains allow you to enjoy the full length of our line on a sixteen mile round trip (lasting approximately two hours) from Llanfair Caereinion to Welshpool and back, including crossing over the River Banwy and famous climb up Golfa Bank.

All our trains are hauled by a vintage steam (or depending on operational requirements, sometimes a heritage diesel) locomotive. Check the planned engine operating on your date via the ‘Locomotive Roster’ page, up to two weeks in advance.
You will ride in historic carriages from around the UK, Europe and Africa. Many of our carriages have open balconies which offer a unique perspective to your journey.
Yes, you will see the locomotive pulling your train at several times during your visit. You will see the engine taking on water at Welshpool and the platform at Llanfair Station is an ideal spot to get up close and take photos, where the crew will often be happy to have a chat and answer questions.
Our main station is at Llanfair Caereinion (SY21 0SF), with the greatest choice of journey times and options. We recommend starting your journey here if possible.
Our Welshpool Raven Square Station (SY21 7LT) is located approximately 1 mile from the mainline railway station.
Please double check your e-ticket for your selected boarding station and departure time. We are unable to hold trains or offer refunds for missed departures.

Yes – we welcome well behaved dogs on the majority of our Standard Class trains, in our stations and tearoom. Please ensure you purchase a dog ticket before travel.
Dogs are NOT permitted in our First Class Carriage (due to the heritage fabric), on Catering Services, or during some Special Events (please check the specific event tickets for details).
Members Free Travel is available on the majority of our Standard Class trains. Please book a member’s ticket online, or from one of our station booking offices (subject to availability) before travel. A valid membership card must be presented to station staff.
Members receive a 50% discount on First Class Travel. Tickets should be booked online and a valid membership card must be presented before travel.

Yes. We are proud to be a leader in visitor attraction accessibility and the majority of our Standard Class trains are wheelchair accessible. Two of our vintage carriages have been specially adapted to accommodate wheelchair users.

Unfortunately, we can not accommodate larger motorised wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
Our heritage SLR First Class and Catering carriages, as well as our replica Pickering carriages, are not wheelchair accessible and have a step-up.

Both our stations at Llanfair Caereinion & Welshpool Raven Square have large free car parks including disabled bays.
Our Llanfair Caereinion Station has two electric vehicle charging points operated by Podpoint (type 2, 22kW).
There is no parking at any of our intermediate stations.
Our Llanfair Station Tearoom is normally open 7 days per week, March – October, and provides a range of hot and cold food, cakes, drinks and snacks (a full menu can be downloaded from the ‘Facilities & Accessibility’ page).
Local residents can apply for a 10% discount card for use in our Tearoom (subject to terms and conditions).
Seating is available in our Tearoom, with additional space in an outdoor covered marquee.
You are welcome to take-away food and drink from our Tearoom on the train.
There are no toilet facilities on any of our trains.
Our Welshpool Station Shop serves a selection of hot and cold drinks, snacks and ice cream.
Please contact us in advance for any dietary requirements when booking catering options.
Please note: We cannot offer Gluten Free options on our Fish and Chip trains.
Yes, both Llanfair Caereinion and Welshpool Station Shops are open on all operating days with a range of branded gifts, toys, locally sourced produce, models and books.
