Join us & support the railway

The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway was opened in 1903 to connect the agricultural valley community to the national network. It made nobody rich but opened up the area, offering access to distant markets and allowing farming to prosper.

Our History

Our beautiful railway

It passed through the hands of the old GWR to British Railways, who closed the line in 1956, bringing to an end just over 50 years of service from a unique railway – but enthusiasts had other ideas. Well-wishers banded together to form a “supporters” organisation which gained control of the railway, leading to its reopening in 1963. The whole line has been restored by the W&LLR Preservation Company and even the two original locomotives are back at work together on a much-improved railway that has recently passed its centenary.

The Company is owned and run by the members who elect a Board of Directors and place day-to-day control in the hands of the General Manager and his staff. The goodwill and fundraising of our supporters is paramount; not everyone is able to work on the railway; some prefer just to support it by being a member of the W&LLR Preservation Company.

New members are always welcome and when you join you become a real part of the railway, one that is a unique enterprise with a fascinating history. To those who would like to help us, we extend an invitation to become members of the Company.

Members’ benefits include free travel and a quarterly magazine as well as a vote at company meetings (voting rights from age 18).
